BMW M2 Gradient Wrap
A Bespoke Design Created for an Interstate Client
Some vehicle wraps demand attention through bright colours and bold graphics. Others rely on subtlety, detail and thoughtful execution.
This BMW M2 project was commissioned by a client based in Brisbane who specifically chose to bring his vehicle to Drive Creative in Victoria to create something truly unique.
At first glance, the design appears understated. However, the closer you look, the more detail begins to reveal itself.
Designed Specifically Around the BMW M2
The entire concept was designed around the aggressive proportions and body lines of BMW’s latest M2 platform.
A custom gradient graphic flows from the driver’s side of the vehicle, transitions over the roof and continues onto the passenger side, creating movement across the entire car rather than treating each panel individually.
The bonnet features a reverse gradient, creating balance and adding another layer of visual interest when viewed from above.
Simplicity Through Detail
Projects like this often appear deceptively simple.
However, creating this level of subtlety requires significant design development, careful material selection and precise installation.
The alignment of the gradients over multiple panels, the transition over the roof, the interplay between metallic film and varying laminate finishes, and the integration of the chrome delete package all had to be executed perfectly.
The result is a bespoke BMW M2 that feels understated from a distance but reveals an extraordinary level of craftsmanship and detail upon closer inspection.
Using Metallic Print Film to Create Depth
To achieve the final effect, we printed the graphics onto 3M™ IJ180mC-120 Silver Metallic Cast Wrap Film, allowing the metallic base to subtly show through the gradients and create depth that changes depending on lighting conditions. The film features 3M’s Comply™ air-release technology and is specifically engineered for complex vehicle wraps and premium printed graphics.
Rather than simply printing onto traditional white wrap film, the metallic silver base introduces a much richer finish, giving the graphics a sophisticated OEM+ appearance.
Combining Matte and Gloss Finishes
Another unique aspect of this project was the deliberate use of contrasting laminates.
The primary body graphics were finished in a matte laminate, creating a refined satin appearance, while selected sections utilise a gloss overlay to accentuate certain elements of the design.
The reverse gradient on the bonnet was also produced using a gloss finish, creating contrast against the softer matte sections.
We decided to carry the gradient concept into the window trims. Rather than performing a traditional chrome delete using gloss or matte black vinyl, the trims were also wrapped in a printed gradient fade. The fade was intentionally designed to run in the reverse direction of the main body wrap, creating a subtle contrast and ensuring every detail of the vehicle felt considered.
